In the photo above right, the second gentleman from the right is Dan Jensen, C.O.O. for the park's principle contractor, Delaware North Companies.  DNC Parks and Resorts runs the Ahwahnee.  (They're also my employer.)  Clearly yesterday was one that Jensen would like to forget but probably won't anytime soon.

The Ahwahnee Hotel is expected to remain closed at least until noon on Friday.

The Ahwahnee Rockslide
Cont. from Page 1
Yosemite Trekker          Post #11 -- 8/27/09
At the trailhead I found a tiny worksite with chairs, a tool storage shed and a water cooler abandoned .  Later I learned that four college-aged kids had undertaken some trailwork along the route.  Since there have been no reports of casualties, all four evidently escaped the impact of the falling rock and lived to tell what must be a pretty exciting story about their near miss.
Below is a photo of what the ground looked like in this area.
By nightfall, the park service had set up a roadblock with a floodlight along the only paved road leading to the hotel.  Guests were shuttled back in groups to reclaim belongings from their rooms, as well as their vehicles.  It was a slow process, prompting a few testy confrontations in nearby Yosemite Village, where a staging area was set up near the Village Store.  Most guests were re-booked at hotels outside the park, which in some cases involved a long, late-night drive.
Dawn breaks quietly over North Dome and the Royal Arches -- 8/27/09.
